Has a universal mount ever been seriously considered with manufactures?

I've seen the talks on the boards, but has there been any serious collaboration or consideration between the manufactures to come up with one uniform camera mount system?

No. If Nikon started making a different mount for instance (universal?), I'd be ticked as I have lots of old glass I can use on modern bodies. I would expect the same anger with Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc owners. There are many adapters, that will have to do....

Why so serious?

Having a proprietary mount makes them more money too, so I can't imagine manufacturers would be on board with a universal mount.

:agree:  they would lose to much $$.  Right now with camera sales down, there is not a manufacture in their right mind going to do something like this.   This would benefit you and I, but not them.

Nikon Z6 | Nikon FM10 | Nikon D80 | Nikon 50mm f/1.8D | Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S VR | 35-105mm f/3.5 Macro | 80-200mm f/4.5 | SB600 | Pocket Wizard II

You are kidding, right ?.... Not gonna happen. That would be like Ford making  products that would fit GM vehicles...

Are you kidding? We cannot even get them to go to a universal RAW format.
Now in the old days there were SLR cameras with screw in lenses. They sucked for the most part.

Ha!  No kidding right.  Can you imagine their faces during a board meeting with this being brought up.

I wouldn't count on it in our lifetimes...seconding the sentiment that too much money would be lost by the major camera companies.

You never know, this could lead to more camera sales.  Nikon users now buying a Canon because they read it's better with lower light.  That Canon user buying a Nikon because it's supposed to do 'X' better than Canon.  I think there could be some additional sales from this.
