Film cameras having a comeback?

7 years 5 months ago #499843 by Jeff Dutton
I've noticed more and more photographers who are shooting film cameras.  Now full disclosure, I've come across 4 in the last month.  So not huge numbers.  However consider the size of my micro cosmos, that's a noticeable number.

Have you noticed more people going back to film, to get closer to the image making process?

That's the why, one photographer told me, when asked why film.

Curiosity. I kept all of my filmers, and used to process my own film and prints. My F100 has been loaded with Kodachrome (if memory serves) for about seven years now. I just can't seem to get it done. Speaking for myself, I'm NEVER going back to film....NEVER!

Why so serious?

Doubtful, however if this is the case, there might be a few companies that would be trilled!

Well that would be a shocker.   This wouldn't happen on a large scale.

I enjoy the whole nostalgic come back, but don't see this becoming anything

Just as there are with other venues, there will always be those that only shoot film. One of my friends over on the West Coast, a wedding photographer, still only shoots film.

I don't see the point, to be honest...

Sure, I'd like a nice old car in the garage, even if running an old fashioned engine with a carburetor that I had to 'tune' every so often, crappy vacuum assisted drum brakes and panels that were forever rusting, but I would use it for special occasions only, and still rely on a modern vehicle with computer controlled engine management, ABS disc brakes and 'treated' sheet metal...

Why make it hard for yourself...

I have a film camera, but will say my digital camera has nothing to worry about

Doubtful, not at any serious scale

As a loyal film user, I don't think that there is a comeback so much as a fraction of people that will always prefer analogue to whatever the newest technology happens to be.

That would be like saying vinyl records are going to replace digital.  Not going to happen.

I doubt it will happen as well, but as for vinyl records, they are regaining popularity here lately....

Film sales are up, and I think Nikon has continued to make one or two film cameras. For me film was never gone, I just got a digital camera too.

Vinyl is back too. Not that either will replace digital, it seems like there are both options, analog and digital.

I knew there was a reason I had my old records in the basement...lol except they're all scratched from years of constant playing and dragging them to school and back and not exactly being careful with putting them back in their sleeves... so now I'm buying records again.

You are seeing more film cameras getting used in the last year or so.  But no come back, just a kick up trend.
