Camera Lens or Body: Which Should You Upgrade First?

7 years 6 months ago #501098 by Farestad
I was watching YouTube clips this morning and came across this one that addresses should you focus on a new body or new camera lens.  Pretty good.

EF 50mm f/1.4
EF 35mm f/1.4L USM
EF 100mm f/2
EF 70-200mm f/4
EF 18-55mm
EF 85mm f/1.8 USM

It actually depends on a number of factors. Normally the lens comes first. That said, if you already have a stable of lenses that meets your needs, then a body upgrade may be in order. The thing to remember is that neither may really impact your photography unless you are stepping up in terms of  feature sets. By getting a new lens or body won't necessarily  improve your photography.

Usually you'd want upgrade your lens before body, but it obviously depends on what you're looking to improve. Best to do as much research as you can and think carefully about what would best improve your overall performance as a photographer.

When it came time to upgrade the lens for my old Sony A200, I dumped the Sony and switched to Canon.  So I suppose I upgraded the body more than the lens.

Assuming my camera body is at least at par, then lens will be my first upgrade.

Glass.  Body prices drop like rocks in a year.

That is why I buy second hand. Half the price with a tenth of it's shutter life gone.

If all you have is a body with a kit lens, then the answer is obviously glass. If you have glass, and a body that is not serving you as well as it could, then a body.

It is like the question of which should you eat first the chicken, or the egg. If you eat the chicken, and have no more eggs to get more chickens, you starve. I let the chicken lay some eggs, and then eat the chicken. :P
