Smartphone Vs DSLR Vs Compact cameras

7 years 6 months ago #501381 by atenasmodel
I have a friend who takes AMAZING pictures from his iPhone...

And know other "photographers" that have a crappy portfolio, owning a DSLR.

I do have my own compact camera and would love to get results as my friend does.

Which is the key to great captures? No matter the 'vehicle'

Photography is a skill set. Gear is of less importance, although certain features may be required to capture certain typles of scenes. Just because someone has "better" gear, does not make them a better photographer. Technique & working within the limitations of your gear trump gear by itself.

Mr. Scott is right. It doesn't matter what gear you have...

My appreciation in the topic.

Study the work from the best photographers so you can develop your eye.

I disagree, a seven thousand dollar DSLR would make my photos seven times better than the stuff I make with my thousand dollar D7100....(worth less now). The more you spend the better you'll be..........

Why so serious?

My D7100 was $1,200... Body only. Of course I got it when it was introduced as well...

How funny.

Effron's comment make sense... You can't have wings without having GREAT gear. I mean. Imagine a full frame body, along with an excellent wide-angle lens.

What the results will be for a landscape photograph, comparing it to one captured with an iPhone.

But! We can still make great shots from an smartphone or a compact camera.

They do sell auxiliary  lenses for smartphones, thus a wide angle view can still be captured. The main drawback of smartphones is the small sensor. Making enlargements or cropping makes the IQ suffer.

My smart phone takes a nice looking photo until I download it, and open it in Photoshop. Jpeg only, yuk! No bit depth, yuk! Its nice for quick snaps though.....

For a split second I thought Effron was being somewhat ironic.
Then I remembered: He is ALWAYS serious!

Having gear that doesn't limit you, understanding light, composition, and being ace at PP.

A phone is a phone, a camera is a camera...

I do wish people would not confuse the two...

Look, Just because I CAN get from A-B in a pedal car, it does NOT make it as viable a mode of transport as an actual car!
