U Dont Need The Top Gear to make The Best Shoots, even if you have one you still need the Skills to make the Shoot, Try to start With Something Low, A Crop sensor will Do the Job Right, I still use my 600D(Canon) and make nice shoots to my eye...

But Try to start With with DLSR, And Study it, If you domain a DSLR the others Will be a Piece of Cake due the Primary Functions be The Same(or with different Names).
DSLR is The Choice, of course for me.

Cheers

An eye for an eye, LSD and antidepressants. Everything in balance. Buddhists call it karma and Christians call it the golden rule, Jews call it— I don't know. Rabbi Hillel said something poignant. Universe always settles the score.
Does it?
No, but it should.

Better yet try and get a large print from it.

Pratice and learning what your gear will do is the key. Screwing up, and learning from it is another. With a lot of patience mixed in. In the digital age it is very easy to learn if you want to. Back in the film days was more difficult, and tedious. You had to actually take notes in a book of shots to learn how settings affected images. Now your camera does that for you in the EXIF data. So try something review it on your computer, and note where it worked, or did not. Persistence&patience are the two Ps to getting good images. Also many times luck that the right moment comes up too.
