Going to Uber to support my photography!

7 years 4 months ago #508348 by Office Guy
There are 4 photography workshops I want to go to next year and I want to get a 300mm lens.  And a new tripod.

My wife as a joke said I should become a driver with Uber for a year, so I can have more "play money".

You know what, I'm going to do this!  All for my 2017 photography :beerbang:

No shame in that, do what you need to do to keep new toys coming in!

Sure beats hearing people going to Kickstarter to try to earn $$ for camera gear!

Not a bad idea at all. If you don't mind, could you update us on how your Uber experience pans out? I've been toying with the idea for the exact same reason for quite some time now.

Here are the kind of things that come to mind, if you're talking doing this for a year (maybe short term there wouldn't be much to consider). How many hours of your spare time would you be giving up? how competitive is it in your area? At the airport in my area there were drivers trying to block the signals so some drivers wouldn't get the calls and others would - didn't hear if it got resolved.

How are expenses handled? like gas, oil changes, new tires, patching tires anytime you pick up a nail - which working in the city doing home visits used to happen to me all the time! lol

What about insurance? would it cost more to add this to your personal insurance? Taxes?? Seems like you'd need to figure out if it would be worth it.

I say that beats many of the fund raising efforts others do. Good for you.

Whatever works to get that gear! You'll probably have plenty of interesting stories to share from the experience at the very least.

This is handled by the driver Sharon.
My advice is to check out the new one I keep hearing about called Lyft I guess. I have been hearing some complaints about Uber, and their changing of what they pay out. It seems that they decided they deserve much more. So I would look into the other ones as well. Also keep in mind that it is 1099 work, and you will have to file for those earnings in quarters.
