Photographing the milky way

7 years 4 months ago #508555 by neal1977
I'm researching best places to photograph the milky way and was wondering.  Is the milky way something that is always in the same spot year round?  So, if I'm traveling somewhere that has photos that others have taken of the milky way, taken years ago.  Can I assume the milky way will be there, ready for me to photograph?  *Assuming clear sky's.

Has to be the same month and day. Although the day-to-day change is very subtle.

Yes, and it also moves across the sky through the night, like any other star or planet....

Why so serious?

With the Milky Way it is not so much as where, but when you shoot it for effect. July is actually the best month in my opinion. This is when the center of the galaxy is in Sagittarius. So it appears to look like steam coming from a teapot on the right nights.  The best sites to soot from naturally is where it is dark.

Not sure that you can ever really replicate a night sky, sort of the way every snow flakes are unique. But I think that's part of what makes the sky so fascinating and beautiful.
