F/1.4 vs f/1.8

It's time to stir the old pot.

My photography meet up group this week had this discussion and it's funny how some photographers get all worked up over 'which is better'.  When really there shouldn't be discussions with that tone.

The idea behind the question is to see what is better for you and your reasoning for it.  Do you prefer the fast speeds of the f/1.4 primes that often come with a heftier price tag, more weight, slower focusing over the slower lighter, quicker to focus and less cost of the f/1.8?

I have no problem with the additional weight of the 1.4, so the speed increase is well worth the added cost IMO.

Depends on the lens.  And what's in the old bank account at the time of purchase.

A half stop isn't worth another grand to me in some cases, but maybe it is to another. Which is better? Take my 20mm f/1.8 for example, its better than a  20mm f/1.4...because I don't have a 20mm f/1.4.....

Why so serious?

I'll buy 1.4 if I get a good deal.  Other than that, the 1.8 is plenty for my needs.
