Excessive exposure to sun damage camera sensor?

6 years 10 months ago #527647 by J Photo Man
So, I was reading an interesting blog article over the weekend and one of the commentators suggested that those that work in the outdoors, in the sun excessively might have shorter camera sensor life.

Is there any truth to this?  I know the sun is brutal, but we are talking about an object (sensor) who's sole purpose is to collect light.

I'm not buying that, but its not good to shoot the sun directly for long, it will harm your sensor....Your lens will act like a magnifying glass, right?....Also, NEVER point the camera at the sun and look into the viewfinder......

Why so serious?

From how I am reading this you mean the camera sitting in direct sunlight. If that is the case no. My D300 has set inside of my cab over MACK with the sun beating down on all of it, and it is still ticking. That particular model of MACK is known for having a good heater in the summer, and great AC in the winter. The doghouse gets hot.
As for shooting the sun even without a filter, and shooting directly the shutter speed will be so high that it is barely getting any heat. You will only have a problem if you do any long exposures, which I really would not know why anyone would want to.

I'm sure any sun damage caused from shooting outside is pretty negligible so long as you'e not shooting directly into the sun
