Rude clients that you want to ditch

6 years 3 months ago #560134 by Francis
This is the official vent thread!

I just had a client that was the rudest, most demanding and full of themselves!

"You listen to me, I'm the bride, I'll tell you where you stand for the best shot"  as an example.

I was simply showing her spots that would be good vantage points.

Arrrrhhhh

That's just the start of it.  I'll spare you the rest.

You have any good stories to share?

I only had a couple issues with the mothers in law. The best one, bride's mommie called me weeks after prints delivery and happy couple, threatened to sue me for making her look fat in the photos. (She was easily a 250 pounder.) I said go for it.
Side note, she was hitting on my assistant at the reception, I had to let him go early.......There were a couple others, I never had issues with a bride.....

Why so serious?

No, I don't do weddings. That said, you have two options (at least):

1) Fire your customer
2) "Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I know you hired me for my skills and that you trust me to capture the day beautifully. If there are specific shots you want, let me make a note. Aside from that, I'm going to ask you to trust me."

Or some such.  <rolls eyes>

I don't have patience for clients like that.  I would fire the client if they tried to pull that attitude with me.

That's why you have contracts.  This is why I do not do weddings.

Yup, I quit them thirty six years ago.....The technical part is simpler now, the people skills required however are way out of my pay or patience grade today....

Contract wouldn't stop a client from being rude.  ;)

Good point by Scotty on contracts; that can be a way to remind someone about what they've contracted a photographer to do, refer back to it as needed to help get things back on track.

Or maybe find something that you can ask their opinion on so they feel like you're listening and taking their ideas into consideration. Or explain why a particular way of doing something works.

Or... don't do weddings! lol

I don't, but have years of experience working with kids and families. Sometimes it might not even have to do with you, there could be other things going on with the person.

Beautiful shots, but a tragic situation

This is exactly why I would never shoot a wedding. Too any prima donnas, high tension situations, drunken guests and experts.
I mainly shoot food and wine; a plate of food just sits there while I play my jazz music and take my time composing my best work for the client!
Didn't even take my camera to my daughter's wedding. I recommended a friend to do it. She did a great job at a good price and
my daughter still complained!
