Street photography with DSLR vs iPhone?

6 years 2 months ago #562959 by George Winters
Strangely enough I think people in general are more accepting to having a DSLR in their face than iPhone.  I've been getting more and more into street photography lately and have noticed the looks on peoples faces when I'm taking a shot with my DSLR and then out of curiosity observed how people responded/looked when using my smart phone.

The thing I can't understand is why?

Perhaps perception that if I'm holding a DSLR with a big lens, I might be a professional vs holding my iPhone and just being a creep on the street?

I would like to hear your opinion on this.

In general, I've actually noticed the opposite. More often than not, people don't seem to notice their picture being taken on an iPhone (probably because they are so commonplace). On the other hand, I've seen a lot of people tense up and get really uncomfortable in front of a DSLR

Nobody has objected when I use my DSLR. But I still prefer my mirrorless camera for this. If nothing else the mirrorless shutter is a heck of a lot quieter.
