Landscape photographers are you sleeping in your car?

I was out late last night and pulled over to catch a few ZZZZZZ's.  I was going to try to get some star shots.  Just ran out of energy.  A sheriff woke me up 45 minutes into my rest and told me that I'm not allowed to sleep in my car.     Never heard that one before.  Thought most were snoozing in their cars when the time called for it.

Are you resting in your car, or getting a hotel room when out needing some rest?

Not me, I take a bivvy, a chair and down blanket wherever I go. I also look for spots off the road.....(Also take a way to make coffee....lots of coffee)

Why so serious?

That's going to depend upon where you are... which you don't specify. So it's impossible to answer the question.

Google it, and see if there's a state or local ordinance.

If I'm tired, yeah, I'll pull over and grab a few zzzz's when I need too.  Never have been bothered.  Just lock your doors.

I've never heard of something like that happening. But what do I know – it's been many years since I've tried sleeping in my car.

Yep, I wouldn't even think twice about sleeping in my car.  If I need the sleep, and it's convenient for me to catch some zzzz's in my car, I'm going for it.

Would that stop you if you needed some shut eye?

Given that some states specifically disallow this activity (asinine though that edict may be... and is) then yes, it might stop you. I'd rather plan accordingly and avoid the possibility of dealing with stupidity.

Of course, I always like to avoid dealing with stupidity. That doesn't always pan out, however....

I agree with Gary's thoughts on this one.  However what is the worst they are going to do, haul you off to jail?  Doubtful.  Mostly tell you not allowed and wait to see you drive off.

I've slept in my car/truck so many times.  If you look legit, if you stumble into an officer, they leave you alone.  Come to think of it, even the time back when I was in college and I pulled over to sleep because I was drunk (lets be honest here).  The following day, an officer knocked on my window and I'm sure I looked rough.  Still, he told me to get off the street.  No ticket, just verbal 'move it'.

A lot of the times, it's for your safety is why they frown on sleeping in your car.

With that said, I've slept in my car plenty of times.  If I'm tired and it's inconvenient or not possible for other lodging, yeah, I'll catch a quick cat nap.

I've never encountered a situation where I felt the need to sleep in my vehicle. Generally, if I'm out someplace where I'm sure to be shooting all the way until it gets dark I suck it up and head home after topping off with a few energy drinks. Being a tug boater and having 3 kids also helps my tolerance to the effects of fatigue too lol.
