Best way to sell used gear?

5 years 11 months ago #581302 by Joslyn
I have some older gear that I'm no longer using and would like to sell it to fund some new items I would like to get.  I posted one item up on Craigslist on Monday and all I've gotten so far are a bunch of scammers trying to get my email address or offering to pay me more and to cover shipping.

I just deleted the listing and now need to find way to sell my gear.  Where can you suggest?  Ebay?

Ebay will probably get you your best price but you'll find a few scammers there as well. Do your homework, all should be fine.

Why so serious?

Your best bet is eBay.

Notes:
1) Sell in the US only
2) Include shipping. For some stupid reason it matters.
3) Start your bidding at your absolute lowest point, and don't bother with a BIN. You could end up losing money.
4) If someone bids that has no history (0 or just a few transactions) cancel their bid. I had an auction botched up because someone with no history outbid everyone, then didn't pay. It took a month to straighten it out with eBay. Note: state in your listing that you will cancel bids from IDs with less than 10 transactions. Or some such.
5) Be honest with your description and don't overstate the condition of the item. Tell why you're selling. Give the bidder warm fuzzies. It helps.
6) Use plenty of photos to provide details.
7) Don't underestimate shipping if you include it as "free". This affects your opening bid.

They often allow listings with no initial fees, taking only a percentage of the final sale price.

Paypal will also take a nice slice for handling the money exchange.....Don't forget that.

Between PayPal and eBay, are the fee's totaling something like 20% of the sale price?

Kind of high if you ask me.

Not if you understand you're paying for convenience, and you're very likely to get either a fair price, or better than fair price, for your item.

And, no, it doesn't come to 20%.

I'd rather enjoy doing almost nothing, aside from creating the listing and going to the post office. Fielding Craig's List inquiries is a royal pain. And KEH wil lowball you every time. Really lowball. They're making money, too. Why that's okay, but eBay isn't, is beyond me.

Yeah, well it's all kind of pro's and con's.

Decide what's most important to you, which conveniences are you willing to skip, or need to have.

Personally for me, I just deal with CL for local pick up only and cash only.  I meet buyers at a Starbucks that is literally less than half mile away from my home.  And I use a trash email address for the ad.
