B&H or Adorama price match?

If all or almost all retailers quote the same price there's a chance the item's price is covered by a unilateral price protection program. These are imposed on authorized retailers by manufacturers or US distributors and limit the lowest permitted selling price. Can't hurt to ask. If one shop is substantially lower I'd definitely ask. YMMV

Which product are we talking about? It matters.

For the main camera manufacturers, the answer is yes. They engage in what I like to call "price fixing". You'll never find a lower price on any Nikon or Canon for a legit, US model that isn't dictated by the company. Which means everyone gets the same discount.

The only gimmes you get are add-ons. You won't find a legit discount price from an legit vendor.

Or, I could be wrong.

I don't know the insides of the camera industry but my industry has MAP (minimum advertised price) policies from about half the manufacturers.  The way we deal with it is to invite phone orders.  We may not be able to advertise a certain price but we can sell at any price we wish.  We just put "call for price" where the price would normally go.  B&H and Adorama used to do that in the photography magazine ads.

My understanding is that high end cameras have a pretty small margin for the dealer so there isn't much to give up on the dealer's part.

I recommend buying gray market.  It cuts out the national distributor and can provide a pretty good discount.  I've been buying gray market (from both B&H and Adorama years ago) for a long time.  I have had only one warranty failure and had to send the camera to Japan for service.  It was a Nikon F5 that I bought from Adorama.

Another money saving thing is to buy cameras used by amateurs.  Some of them are in like new condition and sell at a significant discount from new.

I used to receive the B&H catalog (might still) but I think my wife intercepts that and the Bass Pro Shops catalogs and hides them from me....

Why so serious?

MAP has been part of the camera retail industry for 20+ years. it dictates the lower ad price and dictates how we can reveal the real (usually lower) selling price online or otherwise.

Indeed,

B&H do you still send out catalogs?
