Hobbies that are more expensive than photography?

5 years 10 months ago #585999 by Paris Gal
As I'm getting ready to make a new camera and lens purchase, I'm reminded again of just how pricey this hobby (for many) can really get.

I couldn't think of one, but I'll throw this out there to see if anyone actually has a hobby that is most expensive than photography?

Trap shooting when I was younger, fourteen grand shotgun was only a start. Maybe check what sky gazing (astronomics) would set you back, especially if you needed to photograph heavenly objects?
For a serious shock, venture into horse racing.....

Why so serious?

Golf in the long run is probably more expensive. Green fees aren't cheap.

Most hobbies are more expensive.  Since most people already have a computer any digital camera, lens and memory card will get the job done.  Most amateurs become equipment collectors.  That is unnecessary for great photography puts the emphasis wrongly on equipment rather than vision and creativity.  Photography does not have to be expensive.

10000% Agree on Golf.  If you play regularly and belong to a decent club, this will cost you more than Photography is to the average shooter.

For me photography is the priciest.  Golf is a close 2nd.

My father was a golfer all his life, 100% that IMO is one of the most expensive hobbies out there.  Some of those membership fee's are crazy.

Have you looked at cost of cycling or drag racing?  Those are up there too.

Depending about how serious you are about the hobby in question, a lot of things can add up. I used to be a pretty avid painter, and it wasn't exactly cheap...

My most expensive hobby was power boating.  Never made it anywhere near that level, but yachting is stratospheric.

Me too!
Having been a keen sailor and owned several yachts in my life, I can tell you it ain't cheap.
In NZ we have a saying "Why own a yacht when you can just stand in the shower ripping up $100 notes without even leaving your house?"
