Ever photo that flash was used, clients eyes are closed

5 years 9 months ago #588385 by Carry
I had a evening shoot today, and one of my clients had their eyes closed in every photo that a flash was used.  I could not get their eyes to stay open. I tried every thing I could think of.  From opening eyes last minute, to count down and then open, to have them opening up their eyes as wide as possible.  To surprise photo clicks, nothing worked.

Any ideas?  I ran out of time and told them we can start again tomorrow.

Crank up the ISO on that D700 and shoot without the flash, or get them out in the sunlight for better results anyway....There's still ample, nice light at 8:30 pm currently, no?

Why so serious?

Yeah, you could try without a flash, maybe go a little earlier before you're losing too much light. The more you mention it the more the person is probably getting aware of it and might have been trying too hard to not blink; maybe get some conversation going so they're not thinking about it so much.

You need to learn how to deal with whatever comes up and still get some decent photos (in most situations, unless there are reasons like illness, etc.). It's not the best business practice to expect a client to come back another time because you couldn't get any usable photos. You probably need to get in more learning and practice so you know what to do under various conditions.

Think about where the client is facing, maybe diffuse the light. It's up to you to be the pro and get the job done if you're taking on clients.  If you haven't already you might need to take a portrait and lighting class to further develop your skills.

Switch to constant light. It won’t give you the crispness of a flash, but it’s still nice in portrait.

Did you try saying you will fire the flash at "3" and actually do it on count of "1"?

Possibly the blinking happens on the pre-flash and then captured by the main burst, one thing you can try is switching off red-eye reduction..

Possibly slow down the shutter speed so that the eyes will have reacted to the pre-flash and reopened before the actual flash goes off.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

My sister is that way.   The only thing that I have found to work is using higher ISO with no flash or finding more light so that no flash needs to be used.

My mother is the same way.  That's why all our family portraits are done in natural light.
