Will Nikon and Canon ever catch up to Sony's mirrorless camera?

Or is Nikon and Canon just doomed to sit on the sidelines as Sony did for the last 2 decades of the DSLR rise to fame?

G'day mate

If you refer to recent newsletters on DP Review.com - the answer clearly is that both companies WILL be releasing mirrorless cameras this year

Yes, that is true about their upcoming releases.  Hopefully they both take this mirrorless camera a bit more serious than the last.

It is far easier, especially with technology centric hardware, to catch up than to innovate.  If one assumes Sony is the gold standard and another manufacturer wants a slice of the pie, improving on an existing design, better ergonomics, easier to navigate menus, whatever it is that makes product "a" better than product "b" is far easier to develop than it was to innovate the first design.

Long way of saying if Canon, Nikon or any other manufacturer wants to leapfrog ahead of Sony, it won't be that hard to do.  There is plenty of room at the top.

Can’t really say much on the topic. So far, there are only rumors and the release dates say 2018, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being 2019.

I will say this though; Nikon currently uses Sony sensors, so it will be interesting how Sony handles that business once Nikon steps in to the mirrorless ring.

As for Canon, I Haven’t heard much of anything about it, however, Canon better release a rock star camera or it could hurt the company quite badly.

Nikon doesn't always use Sony sensors. I believe the 850 uses a Tower Jazz sensor. I don't think Sony really cares. They think they can beat both Canon and Nikon with innovation. Nikon has always been slow on releasing a camera but usually when they do, it pushes the envelope.

Yes and hopefully exceed Sony´s ridiculous continuous auto focus on the AR7iii which can only lock focus on the first image of any burst at anything over F:8... we´ll all have to wait for the specs in about a week, i am quite invested in Nikon lenses so hoping Nikon delivers a real game changer like the good old D3 and later the D500 - the D850 is indeed a fantastic camera, but a Nikon Mirrorless with the ability to dispense with lens calibration micro-adjustments which does drive me nuts on primes at varying apertures and especially zooms from third party´s like Sigma would be appreciated..

Yeah, me too. Nikon did real well with AF, I'm pleased and one thing being a fifty year Nikon user has taught me...patience.

I hope Canon makes the controls easier to access on this one.
