Will Nikon and Canon ever catch up to Sony's mirrorless camera?

That would be great. I think Nikon and Canon really need to step up their game big with their mirror less line. If they don’t, I think that will be damaging to their brand for not being eight in a beater anymore.

GJ-Vernon wrote: Yes and hopefully exceed Sony´s ridiculous continuous auto focus on the AR7iii which can only lock focus on the first image of any burst at anything over F:8... we´ll all have to wait for the specs in about a week, i am quite invested in Nikon lenses so hoping Nikon delivers a real game changer like the good old D3 and later the D500 - the D850 is indeed a fantastic camera, but a Nikon Mirrorless with the ability to dispense with lens calibration micro-adjustments which does drive me nuts on primes at varying apertures and especially zooms from third party´s like Sigma would be appreciated..

Can you tell me what you mean? I had always read that Sony had the best AF in the game, now suddenly I am hearing you say it’s lousy.

Yeah, I didn't understand anything he wrote, either.

I don't understand how a mirrorless system can dispense with fine tuning focus, either.

With mirrorless the focus is on the sensor and focus is made using the image on the sensor that will be recorded. With DSLR, the translucent mirror directs part of the image to the focusing block of the camera. If the block and the sensor are not in perfect calibration, the focus will be off slightly. DSLR's don't use on sensor focus unless they are in Live View. I am not sure but I think most DSLR's use PDAF on the sensor. Most high end mirrorless cameras use a combination of CDAF and PDAF which should be faster. Panasonic only uses CDAF I think but they do something a little different from others which makes their focus fast.

Okay, so it's a geometry problem due to the refraction system in a DSLR. That makes perfect sense. Odd that it might affect some lenses and not others....

Thanks for the explanation!

G'day all

Yes - focussing direct off the sensor is 'different' and overcomes the very occasional mis-alignment of mirror & viewfinder & the focus electronics on the floor of the mirror box.

My 5-yr old Panny does 5,5fps with full AFC and gets about a 90% hit rate for sharp images [the new ones do 12fps with AFC] - so the newer cameras & focus systems will satisfy most of us I'm sure. ps- above 5,5fps it goes to AFS and shoots up to 60 fps using the electronic shutter ... where one gets some amazing results at times
