Selling lens on Craigslist? Scams that ask for email addresses?

5 years 9 months ago #592794 by Crammer
I've noticed some email inquiries will ask for my email address.  I'm trying to sell an old lens that I'm not using.

If I respond to a Craigslist response that has email address like [email protected]

This person is asking for my email address and claiming they have questions.  I don't want to give up my email address, but in case it's a legit lead, I don't want to turn them away.  If I respond to this email, will it show them my email address? Or will the email address be shown to them as theirs does to me:  [email protected]

Thank you for your help

You would respond directly to that email address using your own email client. Therefore they would get your email address, yes.

I'm not sure why this is a problem? So what if it's a scam? Just cease communication.

If you're really uncomfortable, go create a second email address on gmail that you use only for craigslist. Something like [email protected].

Your email address may be used for phishing emails and attaching malware.  So there is plenty they can do with it.

G'day mate

I agree with Gary here - keep your personal email address personal & private ... create others for other purposes. I have 3 email addresses one personal, one for forums like this - which includes selling on the internet, one for 'real' business that naturally has my business details, only supplied to people I am actually doing business with

Um, we all get spam, etc. Not using your email address on craigslist isn't going to stop that. You should already have a strategy for dealing with such. Like, not opening attachments until you vet them, for example.

Thus, I maintain my assertion that it's not that big of a deal, at least for me. But my suggestion stands: just create a throwaway email address.

If you're asking, something must be telling you this seems iffy. Trust your gut feeling, and if you don't think this is legit then don't go for it. Surely there will be interested buyers that you're able to determine are local instead of wasting time with this fishing expedition.

I was going to say the same thing.  If your spidy senses are going off, then play it safe.  If you have an email for these sort of things and you don't care about that email, play along and roll the dice.

I use CL with caution each time.  I use a email that is for only selling stuff.  Oddly enough, I get a ton of spam in this email and the only place I use this email address is on CL.

Craigslist has become so bad with scams and other nonsense.  I wonder why the team behind Craigslist hasn't done anything to cut down on this.  Their 'security' measures are the same from 5 years ago.
