What is YOUR definition of 'Street Photography'?

5 years 6 months ago #608679 by Kyle O
I've been getting more into street photography and noticed while talking with other photographers that there are so many opinions on what street photography is.

I'm not looking for a Google found answer or a link to some Wikipedia page.  I want to hear what do YOU consider to be street photography.

There are no right or wrong answers here.

A picture of a street, or spontaneous photography of strangers in their element....

That's a couple guesses.

Why so serious?

By "street" I understand in the open, not concealed or
private… not in a home for one.

Consequently, I include all open spaces: beach, park etc…

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I'm going with public areas of cities where shoppers and workers and locals all bustle about doing their things. This probably is not a rule, but I seem to prefer B+W street photog myself

Taking photos of people

And to some degree, travel photography a close cousin to street photography.

I've seen a couple in the people section of galleries and critique.  Maybe the topic is worthy of it's own gallery ??

Photographing people, building and what ever you find in city streets.

I literally think if it’s on a street or a public walkway, it’s street photography. To me, beach is too much of a landscape/portrait/general scenario, however, a boardwalk would fall in to the category, in my opinion. I stumbled across some great photos of small statues in a church garden that got me thinking more about street photography and what it means. It really feels like it’s just a matter of a place of traffic, whether it be foot or vehicular, writhin a suburban or urban setting.

Urban shooting, for me, I shoot the buildings, objects, close up of trash on the ground (don't laugh, there are some good finds!) mostly, with the occasional person.

Pretty much missed it above.

It's the documenting of the mundane, of everyday life, out in public.

At least, that's the definition I hear repeated in every podcast that I've ever heard discuss it. Which includes references to the recognized gurus of the genre, from Cartier-Bresson to Meyerowitz.

There is a college football game here in town this Saturday and I plan on going over with my camera and walking around taking shots of whatever looks interesting.  People I mean.  There will be thousands and thousands of them there.  This might not really be street photography, but I think It will be good practice for taking shots of total strangers and moving on.  I'm going to take only one lens.  My 18mm - 55mm.

Bingo.  If there are not people in it, it ain't street photography.  Without people it is more likely architectural photography or a cityscape or travel photography.  Furthermore, those people have to be strangers.  Family shots don't count.

there are no rules when it comes to street photography.  IMO, it's what ever comes in front of your lens and it's interesting to you.
