As a new photographer, what do you wish you knew when your first started?

I recently got more into photography and switched up from my Canon 700d to a Sony a7 II (mostly for stabilization, I have very shaky hands) and I'm getting help and tips from my girlfriend who has been into cameras for over 10 years. I'm looking for tips that you guys thought were game changing, like I recently learned that I didn't get 50mm on my 700d because of the aps-c sensor.

I wish I'd have paid more attention to technique and cared less about gear when I started out....Also, your 50mm is still 50mm on a crop sensor. Its a different field of view (cropped) but there is NO magnification factor associated with a sensor, that's a lens' function.

Why so serious?

What he said, above. Sensor size affects the field of view, not the focal length. Nothing will change the focal length; it's a physical attribute

And since we're discussing focal length, note that it's a geometry thing. Don't worry about the field of view comparison.

Wait, you mean to tell me that a 50mm on crop isn't technically a 75mm?

If that is the case, I didn't know that!

Workshops are a great way to learn, get the best shots and socialize with other like minded peeps.  I had always thought tours and workshops work choreographed boringness for tourist and those that lacked creativity to find their own shots.  Now I find its the opposite!

G'day Dias

As a new photographer, what do you wish you knew when your first started?

All the heaps & heaps of stuff that only arrived via hard work & experience.
Real Estate sales people have the mantra ... Location - Location - Location, but for a good photographer it's Experience - Experience - Experience

Long hours, often alone-while-doing-the-job hours, post-processing in the darkroom [film days] - now heaps of keyboard time with good software ... and it does not arrive on a small electronic device called a smart-fone or a new piece of hardware   :)

Hope this helps

Keep your manual handy for reference, and take the time to learn the controls and menus on the camera.

Don't buy camera sold as packages.  Most of the accessories included are cheap and just fillers.

You can find good deals on used gear and that you DONT need to buy new.  No one cares except your wallet.

Don't skimp on getting a good tripod.  It's one item you don't want to go cheap on.
