Airport screening rules and cameras

5 years 6 months ago #609014 by Patrick G
Do you know when airports changed their screening rules that included cameras as items needing to be removed from your carry-on for inspection with your laptops?

I never did understand why all this in the first place.  Their xray can see through our bags right?  So why do they need to be pulled out?

I flew out west in August and never had any issues with my gear. Grabbed it as it came off the xray belt and off I went. Didn't open the bag at all....

Why so serious?

I'm sorry I should have clarified, I'm referring to the trays before the x-ray.  when you have to take your shoes off, and empty all your electronics from your bag.

Another thread here about coming into customs reminded me about this.

I've never had to take my camera gear out of the bag in the U.S. or abroad.

They are currently testing new machines that do not require you to remove your electronics (laptop, cameras, etc.).  St. Louis is one of the test cities and when I flew out of there at the end of august I did not have to remove the items.  It appears that in the near future removing these items will no longer be required.

Um, what are you talking about?  Cameras have never had to come out.

Nowadays, batteries out and visible, where possible. Otherwise, nothing has changed in the US, AFAIK. I'm on a trip right now and no problems at all. Other than my stupid belt.

Well if someone is managing that area, I’ve heard them say to take all  electronics out that are larger than a cell phone.

Does this change from airport to airport?

I cannot confidently speak about cameras as I've only traveled three times with one and I haven't specifically paid attention.  I do know laptops have to come out of bags except for this last trip from STL to China where they told me they are a test city for these new machines.  I just lumped all electronics into my statement.

Don't know, but last trip, I was told to remove all my electronics.  When I asked does that include my camera, I was told yes.  So I had to remove my camera and place it in a tray.
