Alaska photo adventure coming up - Can you see Russia coast?

5 years 6 months ago #610511 by Toby J
I'm planning a Alaska winter photography trip and plan to be all over and was just looking at top left side, this looks so close to Russia.  On a clear day, can you see Russia coast?

Probably not, and you may not see many clear days in that area....Also, you said "all over"...you do know Alaska is quite a big state, right?

Why so serious?

We'll go with "not even". That's 40 miles, give or take; the Diomede islands are twenty. A google found a calculator that says you can see maybe 3 miles. Then there's atmospheric haze.

Turns out, you can see Russia from Wales -  www.adn.com/alaska-travel/article/i-can-...s-alaska/2011/05/20/

Interesting article about Wales while researching this topic:  www.knom.org/profiles/2011/12/27/index.html

I was thinking wasn't there something about Sarah Palin being able to see it? Guess it was actually Tina Fey on SNL that said 'she' could see if from her porch!

On a clear day, climb a hill...

"....actually Tina Fey on SNL that said 'she' could see if from her porch!:"....
Then it must have been true!
To get to far western Alaska, expect to fly in, boat or dog sled, not too many interstates yet....

Why so serious?

Yes, it was Tina Fey, impersonating Sarah Palin on SNL, that said, "I can see Russia from my house!"

Having seen the governor's house in Juneau, I can tell you that you can't see Russia from there.

Still funny, even now.

Dang, what's funny is that I had no idea that there was even this close of a bridge between USA and Russia, I'm surprised there hasn't been an attempt to build a bridge covering the span?  China just opened up a 34 mile long bridge.  This span less when you factor in that island stuck in the middle.

Too deep for a bridge....and the population is too limited, talk about a bridge to "nowhere".

Why so serious?

And then there's the ocean. Have we never seen "Deadliest Catch"?
