How to Photographing smoke rings?

5 years 5 months ago #612146 by GWS
Hey guys,

Photographing smoke rings is all about position of flash(s) right? So how do you pull this off if the subject who is blowing the smoke rings is moving?

Also are there any safe alternatives to tobacco smoke?  I see people blowing out those vapor cigarettes, however the smoke doesn't look the same.

Let me know on what alternatives if any are out there.

Thank you

Gerry

Use a cigar and don't inhale it. I don't get your first question, the flash will easily freeze the smoke, moving or not.....

Why so serious?

You will need a bright light — flash or not — that permits speed of
1/250 or <, in front of a bark BG and back lit of course.

Cigar, cigarette,… anything but vapour.

…and don't forget the opened window! :P

Light is free… capturing it is not!

G'day Gerry

As your flashgun will be pointing towards the camera so that you can back-light the smoke rings, you will probably find lens-flare to be a problem.

Although the shot below is not your smoke rings, to get the shadow-clarity here the flashgun was fitted with a DIY black-coloured cardboard snoot wrapped around the flash head - the snoot being about 3" / 75mm long.  The flash was mounted about 2m / 7ft above floor level - a tripod on a table!
Make: Panasonic
Model: DMC-G2
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/5.0
Shutter speed: 1/160 sec
Captured: Tue, 7 Aug 2012 16:45pm

Hope this helps

Man, so this could be tough.  If the person is moving and if I had a second flash source, that would have to be in position already.

So 2 lights is 100% needed?

Also, are there any safe alternatives for smoke?

Thanks again!!

Hay matey - do not make it too complicated !!!

This project is YOUR idea and YOU are in charge of the posing & lighting & photo shooting
YOU need to take the time to set the scene with one flash gun, suitably located - YOU get the subject seated comfortably and then you start to experiment with camera angles

Then light the cig and do some actual photo shooting - fill the 36 exposures !! - and then evacuate the room and open all the windows  :)
