What circumstances to leave a wedding?

5 years 5 months ago #616359 by MYoung
Another photographer friend of mine and I had our monthly lunch date yesterday.  Always some out there discussions between us two.  We have been friends for nearly 20 years now.  She's been a photographer longer than me, but that's aside the point.

So one of the topics that came up yesterday actually she heard about happening in UK somewhere.  Apparently a wedding photographer got up and left the wedding he was shooting!

Yikes

Later it was found out that his wife was having their baby 3 weeks early.  So this lead into what it would take to get up and leave a wedding abruptly like this?

You hate to think about things like this, but actually have an emergency plan can't hurt.

So what would cause you to get up and leave?

An asteroid strike, maybe. If I took the job, I'd do the job.

So if your wife was giving birth, would you leave?

He could just as easily have been out of town (or country) on a business trip. Unless it was life-threatening (per the doctors) then he should have stayed. Yes, there's always a slim possibility that something dire could happen, but the odds are against that. And if he'd been away, then what? You do what you gotta do and trust that all works out.

My wife had two sons while I was still working, I didn't schedule ANYTHING near any due dates. Anyway, she knows how to drive.....:)

Read my post, please. What if you're in another state or country? A wedding takes a few hours, then you're done.

She knew the deal going in. Finish the job.

Wow!

Yeah, I don't think you can just walk out on wedding like that.

If I were in his position and I knew the due date was nearing and I wanted to be there for the birth, I would put a second shooter on even if it's at my expense. That way you're covered if you need to leave.

I don't even want to think of what situation would cause me to leave. But I will say, if it ever did happen, I better hope my contract stands on it own and I have a back up plan for my client.

While I have not had the opportunity (thankfully) to exercise this.  I do have 2 photographers that I can call at any time for back up.  And I'm their back up photographer for emergency as well.

I don't like to think about doom and gloom.  Knock on wood, there hasn't been a situation when I needed to.

Second shooter is a good idea for the safety net.  Never have skipped on a gig, and don't want to think about situations that would cause me too.  Making that second shooter killer idea.

That's how I got in to it, I was a second shooter, the primary photographer attended the bachelor party on wedding eve, was arrested and jailed going home for DUI, couldn't make the ceremony and it was all dumped in my lap. Worked out well though, and I got a few jobs from that, and so on.....
