Can you shortening a lens hood?

I'm just wondering why some lens hoods are much longer than others.   Does a lens hood really need to be that long, and if not, can these be cut down shorter?

One of my lens hood if over 10" long and an other is no more
than a quarter inch. Manufacturers have a pretty good idea of
what length to include with the lens in the box.

The lens hood should be as long as possible without producing
a vignette… that alone justifies its length.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

+1 here
The 'problem' comes with zoom lenses where the lens hood can only be set for the wide end of the lens rather than the middle or tele end of the lens.  If you are a 'tog who mostly seems to use the tele end of your zoom lens, you might need a second lens hood, this one being heaps longer than the OEM one as supplied

Hope this helps

Nikon Shooter is correct.  However, if your purpose is merely to protect the front element from damage rather than protecting contrast, you can certainly cut one down or choose a shorter one that fits your filter threads.

I wouldn't fuss with it, if it needed to be shorter, they would have it.
