GETTING MY FIRST DSLR (NEED YOUR OPINION!)

5 years 2 months ago #624691 by Matthew_H
I recently purchased a Canon PowerShot SX530 for a beginner photography experience. It was a great camera, but I wanted to do basketball photography for my friends that play basketball for my school. I shortly figured out that the PowerShot is not the best camera for that type of photography.

So, I returned the camera and was wanting to up my game and get a DSLR..... But I dont know the best bang for my buck. I did some research and narrowed in on the Nikon D3400 and the Canon T6. My budget is around $350-$400 (I know that is not a lot at all but im still a teenager and im getting a job at the end of this month).

So I want to know your input on this, since im still very new to photography, is the Nikon D3400 and the Canon T6 the best DSLR cameras for my price range? I know the lenses that they come with are not the best for basketball pictures but they will get the job done until the end of the month.

Hi!
I was in a similar situation when I was getting my first DSLR and can give you my advice, but I'm not a professional. I also had a Canon Powershot to play around with and had a very similar budget as well. I did my research and our Costco had a good deal on the Rebel t6 so I bought it. I think that the difference between the PS and the t6 is HUGE! I have loved my t6 and have used it for my small business that I am trying to start (although I am using an L-series lens, not the original lenses).

I'm not sure if you shoot in auto or manual yet, but I have found that auto works well when someone else is using it to take a family photo or something but I do prefer manual. For basketball pictures, it would probably be best to use manual or shutter priority, or maybe even the sports setting if you are not familiar with manual.

Though I am thinking of upgrading, I still think the t6 provides me with excellent quality for its price and I like its features, especially the wifi. I can only speak from my experience with Canon tho, because I have never owned a Nikon. I really think its personal preference. If you know anybody with either of the cameras you are interested in, ask them if you could take a few shots and you will probably have a preference just based on the way it feels in your hand.

Hope this helps!

Another camera to consider is the Sony a7, especially if you would consider buying used.  You can get some great deals out there.
