10 Stop ND Filters Compared - $10 to $360

Tiffen, sure left a nasty warm tone.

This guy gave a very detailed test on a ton of ND filters.

Well worth to watch if you considering a ND filter.

Good review.  I figured the B+W and Breakthrough would be on the top.  The Polar Pro, never heard of that one before.

Isn't the color tones kind of irrelevant seeing that you can quickly edit quickly in Lightroom?

Big comparison, this was a well done bench test.

Nikon D700: 50mm, 14-24mm, 85mm, 105mm 70-200mm, 150-500mm (Sigma), SB-900

I have a Tiffen and have never noticed the discoloration, however, I haven’t needed to use it at above 5 year. This was bought for using my f1.4 lens and my 28mm for long exposures, but I don’t get out to do landscape as much and haven’t had the change to use it in that manner yet. I think I am going to go out and test it again.

As for the warm/cools, yes, those can be fixed PP if you shoot in RAW. That being said, two things to consider; 1. It does cut down on work flow time if you have lots of photos to edit (which, I assume you don’t because long exposures aren’t something you shoot a ton of, usually. 2. Sharpness is MUCH more difficult to fix PP. It can be done, but it’s not easy.

My Tiffen is sharp for sure, which is why I bought it. For $80, top of the line sharpness, with a chance of having to correct warm colors and minimal vignette in the scheme of filters go, I am happy with my purchase.

Matt really knows his stuff though. Even though he can’t say Nikon correctly, I still think he makes very good videos.

This is an okay review. I appreciate the demonstration of color shift and saturation changes, pricing, build quality and materials.

Where he fails is mentioning anything else. What does "loss of sharpness" mean? If you're going to knock a product in some way, demonstrate. It would have taken little effort to show a pixel peep of the images to illustrate his point. And what did he do to ensure stability of the tripod during the shots? Can we be sure there were no outside influences?

He missed NiSi.

And he misspelled "Newer" on the last image.

Per the company itself, it turns out there is no "correct" way to pronounce it. Whatever you want is fine, according to Nikon.

Have you never watched the DPreview videos? ;)  My comment was simply meant to be light hearted and silly.

Those Nikon folks cant seem to get anything right; Zed, Neekon...it’s like they aren’t even American! :P

Shhh!  You might have a negative effect on sales of $360 filters.

Not entirely. As he pointed out, there's also the issue of desaturation. So if the tones are being rendered consistently across the spectrum, you won't get good rendition. The existence of color cast says that the filter is letting more light through at certain frequencies, which could affect your ability to create what you want/saw. I think that when there's an overall tint, it's not necessarily possible to completely undo it in post.

I could be wrong.

What's funny was that I didn't think so either.  Interesting.  Regardless that was a good comparison.  Nicely done on the detail.
