Which lens would you bring to a car show

5 years 2 months ago #627033 by Kate Stailey
My husband has me going to a indoor car show and wants me to photograph it.  I have never photographed cars.  I shoot landscapes, maternity and portraits.  Seriously, zero experience with cars.  Can I ask what lens you would bring with you.

Any tips would be SO appreciated!!

BTW I have a Nikon D800 and 24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm.

Thanks again.

24-70 works nicely for most of the shows, but a 70-200 comes in handy for the events when you can’t get close, like drag races etc.

24-70 is a really versatile lens and easy to carry. I would choose that if it’s only one lens you can take

Thank you.  Would you think I need a flash or some sort of constant light?

A fast short zoom, that can function as a macro. So, the 24-70 f/2.8 would be the right choice. If you want to have some fun, take a super-wide, too.

Don't bother with a flash. Use a gray card to measure WB and use the available light. There will be enough hot spots and reflections as is.

Spend a few minutes googling shots of autos online, then go with whatever your eye sees.

Don't forget to bring a tripod.  Actually you might want to check ahead of time if tripods are OK.  Some venues with high foot traffic might discourage tripods, however will be OK with Monopods.  If that is the case, there are many tripods with little feet that give decent stability.  However not something you remove from your grip.

Also consider renting something wider than 24mm. With my crop DSLR I use a 10-20 UWA.

14-24mm would be great.  I'd just rent it for the show.

Nikon D700: 50mm, 14-24mm, 85mm, 105mm 70-200mm, 150-500mm (Sigma), SB-900

14-24mm all the way, and have a good monopod as already mentioned.

That's actually a pretty good idea, who would you guys recommend for renting a lens?  I just did a Google search and there are a number of different companies offering lens rentals.

I only have personal experience with borrow lenses. I have rented three lenses from them and have only had one issue that they helped me to resolve.

I've used Lensrentals several times. Zero issues.
