How do you decide between new and used camera gear?

5 years 2 months ago #628748 by Rudy Sosa
I'd like to get in the heads of others and their voice of reason for either.  So when deciding, do you rationalize if there is a nice price gap on what difference the new will do over the used?  Or if the price is close, does warranty push you over to spend a few more bucks to get the new?

It depends on which gear.

Condition (a big one for me), price, desire.

I have only one new lens so far, out of 9. Lights and stands I prefer to buy new.

Condition and price are the two big points of interest for me when deciding on buying used or not.

For moi, it is all about value.  If it's close go for new ... if it's very used (example: belonged to a photojournalist as opposed to a Nun), go new.

There is always refurbished stock, which is used equipment which have been refurbished by certified repair people and comes with a limited warranty.  Not as cheap as EBay but still a significant savings over new.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

Mon cher! :P

Lenses — I don't mind used but ONLY AFTER SEVERE TESTING.
Since I always want to buy lenses for a very long time, I would ra-
ther go for more recent models… but without compromise.

Cameras — they change so fast… I'd be a tad less intransigeant
with a body… but nevertheless rigorous in performance and price..

Light is free… capturing it is not!

How big of a deal, good condition?

+1 with Nikon Shooter.  Well said and on the point.  I suspect that is the recipe for most when buying used.

It's all about deal and condition of the used item.  Most used places will give a 6 month and sometimes 12 month warranty.

When you jump on MPB or KEH, is there anything more important than price and condition?  Warranty is nice, but how often do you need to use it if you have something in good condition?  Hardly ever.

@Missy J, KEH had 12 month warranty during holidays

Price, price and condition.  Like others, warranty is nice, but if condition is decent, I very rarely have issues with any of my gear.  So not a huge deal if I get 6 month or 2 year warranty.
