Will you go out in the rain to shoot?

Man it is WET out!  We are getting a lot of rain.  Matter of fact weather shows next 4 days will be rain.  So, when you have the itch to get out, are you going out or staying in?  I'm feeling like I want to get out, but not sure if I feel like dealing with the rain.  Might be a decent shot to found. 

What about you, stay in or go find the shot, rain or shine?

you are obviously in SoCal...the 4 days gave it away;).....I just got back from shooting in the rain, but it wasnt as epic as I was hoping it was going to be.

I am!  Actually in Torrance at my sisters place right now and was thinking earlier to try my luck with the coast.  Kind of looked like down south might have enough clearing up.

It's when everyone rushes in that it's the time to rush out. This
kind of thinking gets you pictures none has taken or seen.

Snow storms, here I come. Showers won't wait too long for me.
Some bad tongues will say that in full sunshine and 30°C I will
stay away because I can't stand the heat… NO TRUE!

It is because everyone is out!  :rofl:
Light is free… capturing it is not!

Yes ... but you have to give it a lot of thought to get the right subject which is enhanced by rain.  Shooting the ponies (horse racing) in wet conditions is awesome ... shooting surfing in the rain doesn't work. In General, rain doesn't enhance landscapes or cityscapes.  Pre-rain or post-rain helps with scapes. Rain enhances sports and most action stuff as it adds another element of difficulty. For me, in general, actually limits photo potential.  My first trip to South-East Asia, I was young and naive.  I took a Calypso, (the underwater camera which spawned the Nikonos series), to be prepared for the Monsoons.  I never used it.

@ Frost: I am assuming you're visiting ... kinda sucks to visit SoCal and it rains ... a lot, lol.

Nope, I'm a local.  Just moved out to Riverside. So the rain is kind of nice, but on the weekends is usually my get out behind my camera time for me.  VS client stuff.

Okay ... it sucks less as you're not a tourist. I used to live in the South Bay.  I grew up in Chino, now in La Mirada.  
There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

Good question actually. I'll walk to a subject in the rain, but the camera won't come out of the bag until it lifts. It's just too much hassle to shoot in the rain. You need to use a rain fly which gets in the way constantly and always be cleaning your front element. I'd rather shoot rain from afar or shoot the dramatic aftermath of a good storm. 

PS, I left San Francisco hours before the storm hit, bound for LA. We missed the worst of it until we got around Point Conception and then it overtook us. Usually don't see this kind of weather down near the Channel Islands. That's usually the "yay we got out of the bad weather" area. This has certainly been an interesting winter with the storm systems tracking so far south.

If the light is good, it's not an issue. But usually when it's raining the light is pretty bad. More than half my lenses are Water Resistant and capable of withstanding mist or light rain.  That being said, poor light is often the issue. Of my 3000 images on flickr, one was taken whet it was raining but I was under shelter, I can think of a couple from my libraries, taken in the rain.... but of probably 20,000 images, I doubt more than 5 were actually taken in the rain. I have WR gear, the light just often isn't that good. And most of my need for WR has been at Niagara Falls out in the spray from the falls.My step son used to live in Niagara Falls , Canada, I know I shot in the wet at least 4 or 5 times, but after culling for an 8 year retrospective, not one image that needed WR made the cut.

But a few I still have...
Documenting the misery, with a waterproof rain proof camera, rain soaked campsite.

It's not that I haven't seen good photos taken n the rain, one of my favourites is taken with a shockproof waterproof during a light rain.... but just looking at my files, your chances of pulling off a keeper are seriously diminished by the cloud cover.

Winter no, in summer warmer months, yes there is a good chance I'll go out.

When it is rainy gloomy out, I start thinking waterfall/water cascade types of shots.  In fact, I see my forecast is not wonderful for next weekend, and I'm looking round for those exact types of locations.

We don't get much rain in the winter....

Snow, we go out in all the time.
