Why didn't this catch on with all DSLR cameras?

I was just reading another thread here about geo tagging your photos.  This got me thinking about how some cameras got GPS built into them natively.   And only a few.  While others didn't get built in GPS.  Now I know you can whip out your iPhone and snap a shot and get the geo information later.  However that's just another step.

Just makes you wonder why something like this wouldn't have gotten deeper roots.

Just saying.

Very few clients require geo tagging anyway! It used
to be that frames locations be identified that way but
it got out of trend at a point in time.

The last time I did the tagging was for an expedition
over the Arctic Circle some years back.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

It's a feature that very few people care about. In a mobile phone, the data is already there; the app just captures it and stores it to a file.

Frankly, it's more a novelty for me, and geo-tagging mobile phone photos has led to problems. It's really not a good idea to publish that info.
