Increasing ISO or exposure compensation difference?

What's the difference from increasing exposure compensation or increasing ISO?  They both seem to be doing the same thing?

No difference.  Some find it easier to add/subtract say 1/3 of a stop via EC than to divide the ISO and add the quotient back to the present ISO and adjust accordingly.  Often, the EC is more readily available to adjust than the ISO.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

PS- I mostly shoot in manual and find it easier to override the meter / dial in a 'proper' exposure by adjusting the aperture or shutter speed than mess with the ISO.

I find EC annoying. It's just as easy to spin the aperture dial (assuming I have the latitude) and watch the meter. Second choice is the ISO value.

That is assuming your in manual mode. EC is handy if you are an Aperture Priority shooter.

EC sounds like a made up benefit then?  Something to add perceived value.

EV +/- is a most precious tool and the only one I use
in sports and wildlife once the other setups are done.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

For some ... sure.  But for others ... no.  Sorta like an automatic transmission, some like automatic but others prefer manual.

Depends on the method used for shooting. Can be very important especially for aperture or shutter priority users. Not a made up benefit.

I have a similar query about EC. If the three camera values that change are exposure, shutter speed and ISO, then which of these 3 is EC changing? Or is it fiddling with all three?

Typically, in Aperture Priority, EC will change the shutter speed.  In Shutter Priority, EC will change the aperture.  In Program Mode it changes the shutter speed.  On my camera, it doesn't engage in Manual Mode.

Yep, that makes perfect sense, thanks very much.

Ah, that's right. I always forget that there are other modes.

G'day Alfonso

As others here are also advising, exposure compensation works 'best' when you are using any of the P-A-S modes, and as Gary alludes to ... in Manual mode you are doing it 'DIY' style anyway. I shoot in all of P-A-S modes depending on what-where-when, and I use EC daily to refine the result to the image formed in my mind

Another example - last Friday night I was at a rock show where the lighting was changing every second of the show, so camera responses had to be immediate. I was in Aperture mode with EC at -1.5 EV as the subjects on stage were under direct lights and brighter than their surroundings. So while locked in "A" and EV-1.5, the shutter speed was all over the place responding to lighting changes

Hope this helps
