A tripod is unaffected by any of the conditions it
may be exposed to during a flight. Go cargo!

Nope. I've had many valuables stolen from my checked luggage, they're not getting my tripod.

That is so weird. I've never had anything stolen, although I've never put anything really valuable in a checked bag until this last trip. Perhaps it's just a matter of time...

Mine goes in my checked bags too.  Last flight I had an overfilled checked back and I decided to strap to my backpack and accidentally hit a passenger while trying to get seated.

Last two day trip to Rome, I took 2 tripods — each in its
own heavily padded soft shell case.

All the time, that's about the only gear I'll put in my checked back.

I always pack my tripod in the bottom of my suitcase. It is the only piece of photo equipment I will check. Everything else remains with me.

I do too.  You want to make sure you bury it though on the bottom.  That way, you make the potential thief work for it.  Dig through all your drawers and personal items!

All the time, just don't put it next to your toiletries.

Canon 7D w/grip, Canon 40D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 70-300mm f2.8; Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6

Yep, just pack cloths around your ball head so that doesn't get damaged and I've never had issues.  That's the only item I'll pack in my checked bag.
