Serial number erased on camera!!

5 years 1 month ago #632356 by Ottis
I responded to an ad on Craigslist for a Nikon D810 for sale.  The price wasn't that out of the place.  I get there and the camera had a L bracket on it that wasn't mentioned in the original ad.  The seller said it was a last minute freebie.

Things were looking good, the camera looked awesome!  And then my gut told me to remove the L bracket. The seller questioned what I was doing and I mentioned I just wanted to see how these things were attached and detached.

Sure enough, when I removed the L bracket, the Serial Number was erased and all scratched to hell!  I asked the guy and he said "got me this is how it was when I bought it".  F'ing liar, on the phone he stated he was the original owner!

I told him the camera was likely stolen, there is no reason why the serial number should be scratched up like this when the rest of the camera looked new!

At this point I got up and left.  I google searched his number, and no information.  I tried calling it again and it's not even working!

I dodged a bullet here.  SO HAPPY I CHECKED THE SERIAL NUMBER PLATE!!

The unfortunate side of this, is that someone will be reading about an ad for that very camera soon enough, and someone who won't won't think twice about why the L bracket  is there, will buy the camera and think they got a great deal.  Till they finally remove it.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

Where did you meet? They might have cameras that might have footage that could be helpful to reporting this person.

I would still contact the authorities and give them all the information you have including location.  They might be able to get access to video tap from locations around where you met the guy.
