Waterproofing a Lens when it's in a lens pouch

5 years 1 month ago #634098 by Patty Ganahl
Rainy season is coming and all my lens pouches are at best 'water resistant'.  My camera bags all are either water proof or they have rain covers.  However my lens pouches don't.  So I'd like to simply use a plastic bag of some sort inside my lens pouch to keep my lenses dry.

I wish they made longer narrow style ziplock bags, however they don't and the closest you can get for that is submarine sandwich bags, but the down side is that they are made from super thin and not very durable plastic.

When it comes to keeping your lenses dry, even in downpour conditions, what are you using?

I just waterproof the entire camera bag.  If you have weather proof lenses ... that should be sufficient against any water that gets through your water proof / rain covered bag, through a non-water proof lens pouch.  But if you need more protection, use Zip Lock bags.  Yeah, they're not a perfect fit, so just wrap the excess around the lens (another layer of protection).  Get the bags with closure tabs, those bags will be easier to get in and out of.

If you have a water proof bag, why would you need water proof pouches?  If you have to get in and out of your bag during a downpour, find some cover or make sure you have an umbrella.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

Gotcha, well I wasn't really interested in buying all new water proof pouches, i was hoping to use what I have.

Thanks though.

Use a bread bag and be done with it.  Unless you plan to go swimming with the lens, you'll not need anything beyond that.

I'm going to have to agree on this one.  Unless you are planning on submerging that lens bag in water, a simple cheap bread bag or zip lock will be  all you need.  No need to complicate this.
