You learn something new each day.  I was told today that you can use welding glass for ND filter??

I'd be curious to learn how that exactly worked out for you.   Did you get strange color tinting taking place?

How many stops does that equal?

its probably a 10 stop.....at least, considering welding is like looking straight in to the sun pretty much which you can also use it for during eclipses etc......I knew it but have never tried. I doubt the glass is as perfectly made as a proper ND filter though.

The greater issue here would be colour temperature.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

My sisters husband is a welder, when she got started with photography, her husband gave her a piece of welding glass.  From our unofficial testing, it's close to a 10 stop ND filter.  But you always go this horrible blueish colors when using it.

Yeah you'll get a horrible color shift using the welding glass, but it's easy to fix.  Here's a video that shows just how simple it is to fix.

I wouldn't even bother with the welders glass, even with the above corrections made, it still doesn't look as good as the image where the correct ND was used.

+1 agree.  That green looks SOO bad.  It looks flat after they corrected it.

More work than it's worth.  Just get a ND filter, you can get a cheap one for under $100 easily.  Check out some of the Kenko ND filters.
