Exclusive technology patents that camera manufactures have over each other

5 years 2 weeks ago #634702 by George Winters
I was looking at new cameras this morning and just noticed something.  For example have you noticed that when it comes to fully articulating LCD screens, Canon is taking the torch with this one.   Nikon is near non existent, Sony too.  So using this as an example, does Canon have exclusive patent on this that others need to license or find ways around?

Canon was/is not the most innovative co out there.

Their AF focus system was a licence they got from Leitz.
Nikon, as usual, was developing their own and was fully
implemented in the F4 in 1988. They lost the first years AF
battle to Canon and the Leitz AF 5+ years later but Nikon
NOW owns a system that I am happy to use.

Perhaps what NS is saying is that Canon most likely chooses to put so much in to that because it falls short in other areas.

It's very possible, because every manufacturer patents their tech.

Honestly though, Nikon and Sony currently out perform a lot of other companies on the market with their AF systems. In sports, wildlife, and many other areas of photography, the AF system will make or break your shots. These two companies could be an example of the first statement. They choose to put their efforts in to AF system etc.

G'day George

I think that you need to get your facts more up-to-date matey ...  Bridge camera makers have been using fully articulated screens for a decade now, long before the SLR bodies started using them

As to actually addressing the OP's question,

See the above.
For DSLRS, Canon has, I think, one body with a fully articulated screen? Nikon has exactly one body, I know, which is the D5xxx. I can't comment on non-DSLRS. My Panasonic GH7 has a fully articulated screen. All of which function the exact same way.

So, I don't get the question? A given feature might be positioned because the company thinks it will be attractive to a potential buyer. This is no different for cameras than any other product. Does someone have a patent on a fully articulated screen? Possibly. And said IP can often be licensed by others. Or a system can be developed independently. Patents are not over obvious things, they're over innovate elements, and often built upon other things. IP is tricky, but if something is valuable, you'll often see it made available to others, for a cost.
