Are you using a DSLR that is over 10 years old?

What's funny is that this weekend I brought my old D700 and my current camera D810 to a photography meet up.  I decided to use my D700, which IMO is still a great work horse.  Using this older camera brought attention to me from a couple other photographers there who too had dusted off older cameras.  We came up with the idea of having a meetup where everyone shot only their old cameras, something 10+ years old.

Where a good laugh met with reality is that today, when you have a camera that is over 3 years old, that is considered old by many.  Cameras that are 10+ years old are considered relics.

So, back to the headline, do you have cameras that are over 10 years old that you use regularly?

Sure… but not for everything!

Some shooting conditions or types require far more
performances than the older guys can offer. That said,
when speed, extended DR etc are not necessary, sure.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Assuming you are holding other factors constant (digital vs. film, for example):

There are only two things that matter when assessing a camera body that has been out for a while:
  • Sensor performance
  • New features added since
The latter is not germaine since they weren't there in the first place. Sensor performance won't change over time, so all you're doing (by limiting to a product 10 years or more in age) is creating a constraint. Much like limiting your lens choice to a 50mm.

The D700 (since you mention it) still rocks. Age is a state of mind.

Not all the time, but I have a Nikon D300 that I'll use from time to time.

The key word here is "using" right?  Not just have in possession?  I do have an older Canon Rebel that has got to be at least 8-9 years old.  Actually it's my first camera coming into the digital world.  However it hasn't been 'used' in years.  So I guess I'm out of this one.

Nope, not here.  When I'm done with something, it's sold and goes bye bye

My Camera Bag:

Canon 7D | 50mm f/1.2 | 17-40mm f/4 | 70-200mm f/2.8 | 320EX | 580EXII

Nearly. My camera was released in 2010. But it's also micro four-thirds and was designed mainly to do video, so it's really not great for photography. The photos are okay, but things like autofocus and high ISO noise are terrible compared to what I've seen from newer cameras. It also doesn't help massively that I've only got primes, so I spend a lot of time switching lenses and then missing the shot. Especially with anything involving animals. Gonna upgrade this year, I think, but I've got to wait for a tax rebate first.
