Legalities when photographing cars on street and license plates?

On Google street view, license plates are blurred out on cars.  So in our videos and photos of cars, are we supposed to blur out every license plate shown?

You don’t have to, but just think about situations where it might not be a good idea to show them. Google Earth obviously because they don’t want people hunting down nice cars to steal or to use the information for something bad. If you post a plate and someone uses it, or you use it, for defamation, or to get someone in a bind, you can be legally responsible, so remember that.

If you are doing a shoot with a client, and it’s on private property, you can remove the plate (which looks odd), or replace it with a whatever you want. If you are just photographing cars on public roads, you don’t need to, but, I do blur out plates is if I was taking a photo of a cluster of traffic and faces can be made out. This way, a car/plate and driver cannot be matched and it keeps me out of trouble.

If it is on a public street, legally, you do not have to block out the plate if the photo is for your own private usage or for an editorial purpose.  If you use the photo commercially, you may/could have a legal problem.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

LOL What's funny is I read your post yesterday and thought it was on another forum and forgot where I read it.  I was thinking about your question all day today and wanted to find out the answer too!  And posted my own question here not realizing this was the forum where I read the question!

:pinch:

The answers you got are good for me too!

I can relate.  I use to belong to 5 different photography communities and my problem is that I would ask a question on one, and 3 days later forget which site I posted the question on!  Talk about a PITA.  So now I just belong to this one and Photo.net

Well I don't have any car meet up groups to attend, I'll still feel better about this.  One of those things I had been wondering as well.  I sent you a PM, hit me up some time!
