Photojournalism completely dead?

Is there any opportunities like from back in the day?  What does that relationship look like between magazines, news outlets and photographers these days?

Dead? No.  Completely changed? Yes.  I think people still crave that photojournalism brings, but it's over social media and other methods over the net.  People also are exposed to a lot of pictures today so the bar is higher in that regard.

I think there's plenty of life left in photojournalism, it's just a different beast than it was before.

My $.02.

Aren't most photojournalist freelance photographers these days just contracted by the various news media vs back in the day employed?  Correct me if I'm wrong, however that's the biggest change.

In many ways, photojournalism is practice by successfully
practiced by all on a daily basis, it is a way to witness life.

Making it a trade — like it was before — where specialised
workers were on the hunt to document the actualities for
a specific employer… maybe.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

No, very much alive. Just high paying salaries, exclusive gigs and job security is a goner.

Not as it used to be, where large papers had 20+ photogs, all salaried all working every week.

The staffs have been significantly reduced and newspapers have become less profitable and the internet and camera phones more prominent. But there are still plenty of jobs out there if you're willing to travel and willing to be an independent contractor. There will always be some staff jobs, not not as plentiful as before the internet and camera phones. The larger papers, the paper that can pay a good salary ... are looking for those photogs with a degree in journalism/communications first as 'Reporting' skills are more important than photographic skills.

A friend of mine recently toured the Los Angeles Times.  He said the usual tour guide was absent and the tour was handled by a reporter.  The reporter's opening statement was "Welcomed to the Titanic."

(Yes, there are other photojournalistic opportunities other than newspapers, but I am just addressing what I know best.)

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.
