Changing file name from with in camera

5 years 3 weeks ago #637211 by Neil Dulay
I just noticed we can changed our file names in our camera from DSC to anything we want with 3 letters.  Just to make sure, if I wanted to make my file names my initials, is there any downsides to this?

You CANNOT change the files name, Neil, but you CAN
change the way the camera will name your files.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

+1 on the above distinction.

No, there's no downside. All that matters is the suffix, which you can't change in the camera.

All my four cameras will name their respective files in a distinctive
way so I always know which body took any given picture.

One step further.

I partially rename all files to reflect both their origin and diverse info
the name will have to conform to my archival system. For this, I use
the very powerful "ABFR.app"

Good idea to attach additional info.

I generally replace the prefix in camera, then export with the date in the file name. This prevents photos from ever having the chance of duplicating a file name and then replacing the old file. I had this happen and I lost a ton of RAWs. Luckily, it happened early on in my photography journey, so I didn't lose many "good" ones.

Interesting, never really knew you could change the file names.  Other than having separation between cameras, I don't see the need for this.
