Filters that have chrome like reflection vs none?

5 years 3 weeks ago #638181 by Deb Reardon
I was just noticing as I'm shopping for new filter set, that some filters have this chrome like finish or look to them while others just look tinted.

Why is that?  Are there any advantages of one over the other?

Sure, although you don't notice the chrome like finish as you do in the stores, seeing these in person.

This one especially had this bronze chrome like look to it in person:

And this one had some silver like chrome look to it:

G'day Deb

Just eyeballed the adverts ....seems to me to be a nicety from the filter maker to pretty-up the filter. The deal for you is the comparitive cost of this brand vs another brand of equal quality

Hope this helps

Oh, so just cosmetic?  I thought it might reflect bright light out keeping the lens cooler?

Nah… Phil is right, just decorum. No real functionality.

It has to be due to the coating. Note that these are fairly dense ND filters. I would not expect the chrome look for a mild filter. Don't know whether it makes any difference for the image. Get 1 of each and make your own trials.

yeah, but then I have to deal with returning one after I play around with it.  Hoping to figure things out first and avoid having to send back or even deal with that.

Thanks!

Ha!  I always thought the chrome like finish was to control the heat when used in sunlight.  Interesting.
