Sony 85mm 1.4 GM is it worth selling!?

4 years 11 months ago #640763 by troyjames
thinking about selling 85mm 1.4 GM for the 85mm 1.8 and a 35mm Lens. The 85mm GM has some cons such as weight and it’s not as sharp as the 85mm 1.8. The weight and size is the main issue for me. Has anyone made this switch or thinking about it, any information or advise for me regrading this would be great. Part is holding on to this lens mainly because of the GM badge, help!

You are talking about Sony lenses?

Have you shot with the f/1.8 yet?  Does the benefits exceed the cost for you? IMO, when it comes to lenses or other gear, if the value exceeds the cost, then go for it.  If the f/1.4 isn't working for you, find the tools that will.

I'd keep the f/1.4, the 35mm isn't a focal length I use much at all.  I'd want the speed of f/1.4 over the f/1.8.  Plus optically it's a better lens.

Hey Troy, for me, the 35mm isn't a lens I would use no where near as much as that 85mm.  So for me, I'd stay right where you are at with the 85mm f/1.4.

Agree, keep the 85mm that you have.  That 35mm is a very limiting lens IMO

Nikon Z6 | Nikon FM10 | Nikon D80 | Nikon 50mm f/1.8D | Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S VR | 35-105mm f/3.5 Macro | 80-200mm f/4.5 | SB600 | Pocket Wizard II

+1 keep the 1.4, those other 2 lenses are no interest to me.

Do you have a use for the 35mm?  If so, and you are lean on cash, go for it.  Otherwise, you'll find the 35mm isn't the most popular focal length.  Something to consider.

Not following anyones band wagon here, but the 35mm is such an interesting focal length.  Not one of my favorites.  But hey, it might be right for you.  I would rent one first for a weekend, see if you like it, does it exceed your expectations.  Then buy one.  That 85mm f/1.4 is a nice lens.

Have you looked at www.mpb.com and buying it used?

Nikon D300 24-70mm f2.8

OH yeah, that 85mm 1.4 is a sweet lens, those others are OK at best.

I have a 35mm and it's the least used lens in my camera bag.  Keep the 85mm f/1.4
