Are you checking models IDs?

4 years 10 months ago #642706 by Jim Photo
I've been hired by a rather revealing bikini company to photograph a model that they have hired in these rather revealing bikinis.  I've been told the model is 21 years old.  I've seen her and she looks young.  This bikini company is a start up, so I can't help to think if anything goes wrong, I could be roped into this more than I care.

Now keeping that in mind, I'm thinking about having the model sign my release also.  Even though I've been told she has signed their release.

Can I legally ask to see her ID?

My experience has been in sports and I'd check with the coach or their youth sports organization; they always had releases signed by parents for publicity purposes, etc. I didn't use the photos for anything else so didn't need to get releases for my own use.

A start up is a red flag because you have no experience working with this company. Personally I'd lean toward getting some verification of her age but I'm not sure what's the best way to do that.

If you want to use photos of her for any purpose other than the work you've been contracted to do for this company you'd need her permission/release signed. Since this is commercial work check the contract to make sure you can use photos you take, because you own the copyright but may not be able to use the photos for your own use/financial gain. And she's wearing their products so find out about permission/product releases to use your photos of their products on the model.

Try PPA or asmp.org to look for info. on releases and how to verify age with models.

You're being hired to provide a service, and they're handling details like talent. That's not your concern.

However, if you intend to use the images for other purposes, you'll want a model release signed. In which case you can verify age. They'll certainly have a signed release, so why shouldn't you?

N.B. Pour on the charm, complement her on her youthful appearance, and remark "I would have pegged you at 18. Those 'look young' genes are going to do you well!" Or something equally light to make inroads to the real subject. Nothing wrong with being legitimate. And if the client doesn't like it, that's their problem, ultimately, right?

These days, can't be safe enough.  Make sure you have your own release.  I wouldn't flinch about asking for ID.

Dude, you can't be safe enough.  When in question, ask.  That will insure you stay clear of trouble.

This being the touchiest issue in the trade, IMO!

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Why leave anything for chance or for the hunters of opportunities?  Something like this takes less than 30 seconds, when done in a non creepy way, and part of your workflow, there shouldn't be any issues.  And its responsible IMO.

Jim, full discloser: I don't photograph teens or nudes, so I'm not put in this situation.  However if I was, you darn right I would ask.  I value freedom, and I think it's a good play it safe rule.  Teens these days look older than they really are.
