Are all IBIS systems pretty much the same?

Shopping around for a new camera body that will be used for primary video work.  Now I see many camera companies are talking about IBIS, seems like this is the new buzz word.

My question is rather basic, the mechanics behind IBIS, is it all pretty much the same?  Or is there one IBIS system that is better over others?

They are generally basically the same. You have to keep in mind the size and weight of the sensor being moved around. That's why you see Olympus and Panasonic having the best IBIS of the bunch. The sensors are smaller and lighter which means they can move more and more quickly than full frame sensors. I have shot 1 to 2 seconds handheld with my Olympus and the result is freaky good. The best thing about IBIS is it makes any lens stabilized. The best systems are when you have a compatible lens and camera body and get sync IS which uses both in body and lens stabilization. The new Olympus E-1X has 7 to 7.5 stops of stabilization with the 12-100 lens. That is truly amazing.

2 second hand held exposure?  That is freaking nuts!  Sharp image on computer screen?

Yeah, focal length plays a role though. Don't expect anything like that at 400mm, but anything below 100mm you can possibly pull it off. It takes a certain technique holding the camera too. Tight to the body, elbows tucked...

I am not as successful as others, I will admit. I know some will get as low as 1/200 on a 400mm hand held, but I haven't pulled that off. Many don't care for Tony and Chelsea Northrup, they have designed their own "rule", called the rule of doubles. It's been featured many times, and it's pretty handy. Give it a try and let us know how it works.

I can easily shoot between 1/60 & 1/80 at FL 400mm hand held, the lens is stabilized and synced with the IBIS of the A9.. of course most of my own images at the moment are up in the 1/2000 shooting small birds.

Man, I wish I had the budget for a Sony a9!  But between the cost of the body, and all new glass, not on my horizon.

Still thinking about that 400mm lens you are able to hand shoot!  Crazy, but isn't that a super heavy lens?
