How to remove sand from camera bag?

4 years 10 months ago #644991 by Giovani Rice
I'm typing this from Cabo Mexico.  I just spent day on beach during heavy wind.  I had my camera with me in case I wanted to take photos.  However wind was to strong and I didn't want to expose my camera to the elements.

Now, I'm back in my room and sand is all in side of this bag.  I have tried shaking it out.  But sand keeps showing up.  It's an F-stop bag.  Can this be washed with our ruining the bag?  Actually would all of the sand even come out.

What do you think?

I would dare suggest you open ALL compartments,
detach ALL divisions and empty everything out of it.

Shake or beat it vigorously and finish with a decent
vacuum cleaning.

Have a good time and good luck. :P

Light is free… capturing it is not!

With the exception of the vacuum, because I'm in a hotel room and don't have one.  I have done all the rest.  Sand still keeps showing up.  I hate to put my gear in it and then have sand getting all into my gear.

I might need to find some zip lock bags for my camera and lenses for transporting these back home.

What's the bag made from?  Is this something you can hand wash?  Does the hotel room have a bath tub?  IF so, and if the material is canvas or that poly material companies will often use, try hand washing the bag, let it soak for a few minutes first, then wash and let it hang dry.

Would it be possible to simply ask reception/staff if you could get access to a vacuum cleaner at the hotel?
Other than that I don't think it will be possible to get everything out.

Got an older f-stop gear bag.  You can wash these, but make sure you hang dry.   Don't try to put in dryer with any heat.

You can use a vacuum cleaner.

When you wash it be sure to use cold water.  Also if the shower head has removable nozzle shoot the nozzle in the seams of the bag, that should flush out most of sand.

Might be best to put it in a plastic bag, tie it shut, and deal with it when you get home. Is there a gift shop that might give you a bag to keep it it in?

You're probably right about putting your camera in another bag til you get home... I might try turning the bag inside out if possible and brushing it out. If you try to wash it I'd plan on letting it air dry well before using it again.

Hey guys, thank you all for your help.  Turns out the hotel had washing machine I could have used, but it was such an old and small machine I decided to wait till we got back home.  We just got home yesterday.  I picked up zip lock bags and just put my stuff inside those bags, then back into the back pack.  I have the bag in the wash as we speak, extra long cycle and extra rinse on delicate and low spin.  We'll see what happens here.
