Camera sensor lifespan

From what I have seen, and depending on camera manufacture.  They say camera sensors are good upwards of 250,000+ shots.

So what happens when a sensor fails?  Does it just get weak, and sharpness goes down the toilet?  Or are we talking degradation in color, increase in noise, or contrast?

What exactly happens here?

I think you got a wrong interpretation, here, Ivy.

The concern and the count are about the mechanical
shutter/mirror assembly and not the sensor itself.

The sensor itself is/has no moving parts and is not given
a time limitation as such.

Shoot in peace. :P

What he said, above.

Shutter actuations have an estimated count, but that number can range from 150K to 500K. You'll usually find an estimate in the technical specs area on the manufacturer's documentation.

I think the bigger problem with a sensor might be the development of a bad pixel, but it's not an issue I've seen raised, here or anywhere.

The nice thing about shutters is that they can be replaced, making the camera as good as new.
