Getty Images Sued Yet Again For Trying To License Public Domain Images

Well this was an interesting discovery.

https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20190329/15352641901/getty-images-sued-yet-again-trying-to-license-public-domain-images.shtml

"The lawsuit also points to Getty's infamous copyright trolling practices via its subsidiary License Compliance Services (LCS), but never actually shows that LCS has threatened anyone over the use of public domain material... other than raising the issue of Carol Highsmith, whose lawsuit we mentioned above, and which got thrown out of court.I'm certainly sensitive to the slimy practices of Getty Images, and claiming that public domain images are available for license (at very high fees) is very slimy. But it's not at all clear that it's against the law. And it's certainly not RICO (dammit)."

I'm cracking up about the editors use of words.

It sounds like Getty has a list of attorneys that know all of the copyright loopholes. Another reason legislation needs to tighten up these laws. They argued nothing they did was against the law, and they have won every time, but yet everything they did SHOULD be illegal activitY.

i think the issue is they are all taking Getty to court for copyright, when in fact, they are breaking laws outside of the copyright spectrum. It’s an evil tactic.  These might be covered under federal consumer protection laws, not copyright, because the first person to attempt to fight it lost because they tricked her in the contract

I don't think TechDirt has an editor, or any writers - it's a blog. Says under Submissions 'We thrive off the story submissions of our readers."

Doesn't look like they pay for articles, they take what people type on a keyboard and give them for free, and make money from ads. You're just reading one person's opinion.

Oh you know they do!  They are always looking for ways to exploit the system.

And we should be surprised about this?  Getty has been doing this sort of stuff for some time.  Search news releases under  their brand name  for afternoon entertainment.

If you do business with Getty, it’s your own fault considering how much they are in the news.
