Will shooting at higher than base ISO impact recovering highlights?

Correct me if I'm wrong, most camera will give you around 2 to 4 stops of forgiveness from the base line ISO to regain highlights?  And this is not impacted by these cameras dynamic range right?  And with the sensor loaded up, the remaining data is toast, aka the blown out highlights?  So keeping this in mind, if you have your camera set to a higher than base ISO, would this help or impact the recovery of these blown out highlights?

Yes and no, Ted!

The idea is ok IF not using any priority mode in your setup …
and that would not be the better strategy anyway.

You best tools to protect your files are the histogram (your
best friend ever!) AND the EV function of your camera.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

It depends on the camera model. Each sensor and processor is different. Every camera I have had has different characteristics and abilities to recover highlights. Newer models tend to be a lot more able to recover highlights even when not shooting base ISO. Most cameras lose dynamic range when shot at a certain point above base ISO but not by much. See discussions on ISO invariance to get a better understanding how it works. In the real world it means little and varies widely from scene to scene on whether you can recover the highlights. Watch your histogram or if you don't want to do that set the "blinkies" in camera. I set my upper limit a few points under pure white so when I see the blinky first appear, I know I still have a tiny bit of headroom before it's completely blown out.

Huh?  Most cases no.  Just because you raise your ISO, you might see slight improvement in recovery, however lost highlights are lost hightlights.
